André Theuriet, the author of our story, was born

where he received his- éducation.^ . He studied law,

1880. His présent/ hçn^ -ip^ Bourg-la-Reine, a
résidence suburB of Paris. 'Sîe was elected to the
French Academy in 1896.
Theuriet is one of the most notable of contem-
porary French writers, among whom he occupies an
honorable position. Literature early claimed our
author's attention as the chief calling of his life, and
his collected works are quite bulky, comprising up-
ward of forty volumes, represented by poetry and
fiction. His first appearance before the public was
in verse, which was received with marked favor.
But it is as a novelist that he is best known, and his
production in this line has been unbroken for the
past thirty years.
