There is one inepecteur for each département (cf. 1. 20), who appoints — subject to the confirmation of the Préfet — the primary and seoondary teachers, and supervises their schools. His superior is the recteur d^académie^ in which expression académie dénotes an administrative jurisdiction for educational purposes, comprising several départements (four or five), of which the recteur is the head, or gênerai superintendent. There are in France a score of recteurs and about 100 inspecteurs d'académie.
