16. Saint-Amand, There is a French playwright of this name (1797-1885), a prolific writer of comédies and vaudevilles. founded French Academy (1635), was fond of good cheer and addicted to bibulous inspiration. 152. 19. Petit-vin (very otten=vin inférieur , vin de seconde cuvée, vin fait avec le maro — skins — du raisin à sa sortie du pressoir) . But the above is not the sensé of the expression m the passage. In France the term petit-vin is also extensively applied to a light-colored wine grown in the north-east and central parts, as opposed to the gros vin of the south, which is thicker and darker, almost black. Hère in the text the petit-vin referred to is the characteristic wine of Bar-le-Duc, of which there are two kinds, one light red and the other, called vin gris de Bar-îe-Duc, slightly pink — sometimes straw-colored (cf. pelure d'oignon, p. 170, 1. 12). The latter is highly esteemed.

20. Ce petit lait, whey. The term is used playfully to emphasize the assumed innocent qualities of the petit-vin mentioned above. For as a matter of fact the latter is quite capiteux (heady, intoxicàting, cf. p. 18, 1. 16) ; but as it is singularly free from the sharp harsh taste of alcohol to wam one of its strength— it is ail the more treacherous (cf. exp. "ce traître vin pelure d'oignon," p. 170, 1. 12). On account of its smoothness to the taste it bas given rise to current sayings in the neighborhood of Bar-le-Duc, as, ce petit vin se boit comme du lait, il est moelleux comme un velours, etc.
