PREFACE

A GLANCE at the catalogues of American firms publishîng foreîgn texts for school use will prove that no apology îs needed for bringing out another one of George Sand's novels for class use. Thîs édition of Le Marquis de Villemer may prove to be an acceptable addition to the small number of her stories now available for use in our schools.

As the original is rather long, it has been reduced by about one third for this édition, the omissions being, it is hoped, such as in no way detract from the interest of the story. With a view to getting out a simple and inexpensive édition, the introduction is limited to a very brief outline of the life of George Sand and a short discussion of her works. For fuU accounts of her life and works consult ''George Sand"; E. Caro (translation published by McClurg & Co., Chicago), and the article by G. Pellissîer in Petit de Julleville, "Histoire de la Langue et de la Littérature Française," vol. VIL

The editor desires to acknowledge his indebtedness to the gênerai editor of the Oxford séries, Professor Raymond Weeks, for his very kind help and encouragement.
