OPINIONS OF THE PRESS
» English students of French literature are indebted to Messrs. Hachette and Co. for the publication in their sériés of Modem French Authors, of sélections from the prose and poetical works of Alfred de Musset. Alfred de Musset is known as one of the most hrilliant writers of the présent century, and in the sélections mada for this volume the editors bave included some of his cleverest works, and hâve afforded the student an opportunifcy of comparing his different styles as a dramatist, novelist, and poet. “On ne Saurait Penser a Tout,” and “Il faut Qu une Porte soit Ouverte ou Fermée,” are two of the author’s most charming proverbial comédies, and Alfred de Musset never wrote anything more beautiful than the two novelettes, “CroislLles” and “ Pierre et Camille.” The latter is a perfect story on a
French model, and is instructive as well as interesting, as illustrating the change which has taken place since the time of the Abbé De l’Epée in the treatment of deaf mutes. The sélection is a welcome and valuahle addition to the sériés. "The Leeds Mercury .
“Mr Masson, in his Sélections from Alfred de Musset, has made some judicicms extracts from the works of one of the most élégant lyric poets and vigorous dramatists that modem French literature can boast.” Scotsman .
« ig generally believed that Alfred de Musset’s works, admirable as fchey are, must, on account of their character, be scrupulonsly excluded from the schoolroom. We hâve been told that it would be impossible to make from them a sélection ooth ample and varied enough to give a satisfactory idea of the writer. Young persons must, it is said, beiieve on the authority of more experienced readers, that the poet who charmed us by «L’Espoir en Dieu” was one of the greatest représentatives of contemporary French literature. M. Gustave Masson has endeavoured to show the fallacy of this statement by publishing a volume in which will be found choice specimens of Alfred de Musset s composition in every style.” School Boetrd Chronicité
Vol. VII.— PONSARD, LE LION AMOUREUX. Edited by fi. J. V. de Candole, M.A., Ph.D. 1 vol. small 8vo, clotb, 2s.
OPINIONS OF THE PRESS
“ The resuit is a cliarming little book, which we can heartily recommend to ail our readers.” School Board Chronicle .
« M de Candole, French Master at Clifton College, has prepared an excellent édition of Ponsard’s famous comedy ‘Le Lion Amoureux’— not perhaps a work of genius, but on the whole the author’s masterpiece, and therefore having spécial interest as an example of the dramatist wholed the reaction against the triumph of the romantic school, and also valuable for éducation al purposes from the purity and grâce of îts language. M. de Candole has appended numerous notes and an index which increase the utihty of the work as a class-book.” Scotsman.
“ Mons. H. J. V. de Candole, French master of Clifton College and lectnrer at the Bristol University College, has brought before the public, in an interesting form, one of the finest of Ponsard’s productions. ‘Le Lion Amoureux’ is the seventh volume of Hachette’s sériés of modem French authors, a sériés of spécial value and attractiveness w the more advanced class of students. The biographical sketch which enters thoroughly into the spirit of Ponsard’s style, is at the same time a comprehensive statement of his life and work and a careful criticism of his position in French literature. • • • • The notes and biographical index are copious and useful, the work of a mmd. well acquainted with the requirements of modem study in its advanced stages. They give to the English scholar a distinct idea, which would otherwise be difficult of attainment, ot the whole purpose of the French dramatist ; and make it possible for him to grasp, with as much ease as a French reader, details that, without them, would be passed over unpereeived and unappreciated. ‘Le Lion Amoureux’ is to be commended to teachers of French as more than usually interesting in itself, and rendered doubly so by M. Candole’ s method of treating it.” The Western Daily Press.
“ ‘ Le Lion Amoureux,’ in the cheap and comprehensive form in which it has been just issued, will form a valuable addition to the sériés of French educational works being published by Messrs. Hachette and Co. M. de Candole is also to be complimented on tha
efficient manner in which he has edited this little volume.”
The Clifton Chronicle and Directory.
“Hachette’s French Library.— Professor H. J. V. de Candole, Ph.D., M. A., French lecturer at University College, Bristol, has just published vol. vu. ofthia senes of modem French authors, ‘Le Lion Amoureux,’ by François Ronsard. Tins play the last but one written by the late poet— deals with the avents ot the Reign of Terroi, ana was successfully produced in Paris ten years ago. Rie pure and vigorous styie adopted wiU commend the work to a wide circle of readers, and it is need.less to say M. Candole s editing of the volume is worthy of one who is an experienced as well as an aple contnoukor to philological literature.’’ The Bnstol Daily Post.
