PREFACE TO THE SECOND EDITION. XI

As a concluding remark, I would remind the student that one great object of an acquaiutance with a living language is the acquisition of a facility in speaking it ; and with regard to the French tongue, nothing short of this acquisition can entitle him to the désignation of a sound French scholar.

Having exerted my utniost endeavours to produce a work of real utility, I fervently trust that, whilst it facilitâtes the study of the French Language, it will aiFord as much delight to the Pupil, as it has done to the Editor in its compilation. I hâve but to add my sincère thanks for the learned and kind assistance so readily granted to me by those friends it has been my good fortune to make in this country.
