The excellent German édition of this text, by Dr. U. Cosack of Bremen (Leipzig, 1891) has been invaluable in the pre-, paration of the présent édition, by affording, among other things, the German view of the e vents of 1870-1871.

It is hoped that the two maps which accompany the Notes

will be found of much use in giving reality to the stratégie

and other movements described or referred to in the

text.
