1. Daniel has scored off Armand. He has allowed Monsieur Perrichon to save his life.

2. Daniel pretended (faire semblant) to fall into a crevasse.

3. Perrichon was walking in front. He turns round (se retourner) to find that his friend had disappeared.

4. He describes the adventure to them with great émotion, and has the traveller's book brought to write down his impressions.
