Here is a city, once the seat of a baron, who in wealth and military power was second only to the King ; a port far busier than Liverpool ; an outpost menacing the mystical hills of Wales ; a fortress made essential to each successive invader of the island. Its municipal records give a clear insight into the social conditions of mediæval towns, and its name is associated with one of the few complete collections of Mystery Plays remaining to us. Such are the themes touched upon in the letterpress of this book. Mr. Harrison Compton has been particularly successful in his illustrations in reproducing the distinctive romantic character of the place. His masterly drawing and knowledge of architecture are at once apparent in his pictures of the well-known ‘‘ half-timbered ”? houses of Chester, and his renderings of typical atmospheric effects are admirably subtle.
