This book will make a direct appeal to the child’s natural interest in the far-away and the unknown. While home geography, with its first-hand experience, awakens a sense of direction, distance, proportion, and general relation, necessary for the development of the geographical idea, and intensifies interest in the immediate environment, it is necessary that the child’s vivid imagination should, at the same time, be supplied with material in the form of story-like descriptions, illustrated by pictures, of other conditions of life. In this way its outlook is widened and its love of the wonderful at least partly satisfed. This is the aim of the present book.
