P. 233, 1. 3. contre l'opinion de Calvin. Pascal's brilliant dialectic in the pages whioh foUov? reposes on a false basis. His distinction between the Janseuist and the Calvinist view of Grâce will not stand. He claimed that the Janseuist allows Free-Will to man, whereas the Calvinist dénies it, looking upon man as a mère machine moved by an irrésistible power. Janseu, foUowiug St. Augustine, admitted that man has the power to resist Grâce, if he will. But so did Calvin. What Calvin maintained was that man cannot will to resist Grâce, since it is Grâce itself which détermines his will. But this is the position of Alvarez, St. Thomas, aud St. Augustine himself. And the Council of Trent in condemning a mochanical theory in the Heformers, condemned a fiction. See Mozley, Augustinian Doctrine of Prédestination (18)5), note xxi., and before Mozley, Pierre Bayle, in his Dictionnaire (1695), s.v. Jansenius.

P. 244, 1. 42. Vous obtintes. Pascal could fairly say " vous " if only for the fact that the great Jesuit Bellarmin, as a member of the Congrégation of the Holy Office, had no small sharc in procuring the condemnation of the Copernican theory. Cf. next note.

P. 245, 1. 1. Ce Décret de Rome. The Copernican theory that the earth revolves round an immovable sun wtis condemned by a Decree of the Inquisition of 5 March, 1616. Galileo was not mentioned in the decree, but he was known to hold the theory. Bellarmin, who was hia Personal friend, conveyed to him newa of the condemnation, which,

doubtless by hia advice, Galileo promised to observe. Notwithstanding this Galileo published in 1632 a Dialogo sopra i due massimi Sistemi de mondo, in which he contrasts the Copernican and Ptolemaic Systems, to the great disadvantage of the latter. The Dialogo was at once condemned by the Inquisition, i.e. in 1633, but the Decree embodying the sentence was not issued until 1684.

It is to be observed (1) that Pascal does not make the mistake into which Protestant critics hâve often fallen of ascribing to the Pope the Decree against Galileo ; (2) that the Decrees of 1616 and 1634 were never received in France, and that in 1711 a Jesuit, Père André, maintained a public thesis, " Systema Oopernicanum defendimus tanquam hypothesim ingeniosam si non veram," refusing to adopt the Censor's altération of si into etsi ; (3) that Pascal does not commit himself on the right or wrong of Galileo's theory. Elsewhere he says : " Je trouve bon qu'on n'approfondisse pas l'opinion de Copernic "... {Pensées, No. 218), and in his Lettre au Père Noël ho is ready to give equal weight to the théories of Ptolemy, Tycho Brahe, and Copernicus.

P. 245, 1. 7. Zacharie. Pope from 741 to 752. Cf. Epist Zach. Papae ad Epist. Bonifacii, 82 (MPL, Ixxxix., col. 946). A greater than Pope Zachary had denied the existence of the Antipodes. St. Augustine argued that, there having been only one pair of original ancestors, it is inconceivable that such distant régions should hâve been peopled by Adam 's descendants.

P. 245, 1. 23. depuis si longtemps, i.e. since 1649, when Arnauld wrote his Considérations sur l'entreprise de M. Ccyrtiet.

P. 245, 1. 34. pn-o nihilo. See above, p. 241, 1. 21.

P. 246, 1. 34. J'ay de la peine à comprendre, etc. This seems to shew that Pascal was not at one with Port-Royal.
