Letters Patents, in the préjudice of tke commun right and priviledges of that Isle and the spedall Lawes^ Statutes and Ordinances, mode for the good govemment ofthe same, ^c. L'examen àe leur dispute fiit envoyé par devant le Seigneur Garde des Sceaux, et dans le rapport qu'il en fist il se servit de ces termes : Having called ail parties hefore him and heard ail the allégations of them and their CounceU upon the whole matter, he was of opinion that there is no right in the Govemor to name the Bailif, though sometimes tnisted with the nomination, nor is it reasonable it should he claimed as a right, the Bailif in some cases having a check upon the Govemor.

Item, " to the 17th, " We found not any Jurats displaced, contrary to the " orders and priviledges there, but upon the hearing " it appears that John De Carteret, one of the plain- " tives, and one Joumeaulx ^were, for good causes, " sequestered from their places by an Act of Common " Councell, during such time as the said Carteret's " appeale, which he had before Your Honors, should ^^ dépend undecided. And for that it appeared unto " us by Your Honors' order made upon the report of " Mr. Attomey Generall and Mr. Solliciter, that the " said appeale was unjust and ill-appealed, and so the " time limited by the Jurats for their said sequestra- '^ tion expired, we dedared the said séquestration " void."
