Tenaple. Specially applied to a Protestant church

P. 33, 1. 13. Fériés, vacation. Herder, the translation of Herder's ' Philosophy of History,' which made Quinet's fortune, though not at once. Johann Gottfried von Herder (1744-1803), a German writer of much merit and more influence, published his Ideen zur Philosophie der Geschichte der Menschheit between 1784 and 1791.

P. 34, 1, 6. À la diligence ; that is to say, the Diligence Office.

1. 27. Excentricités. In the literal sensé of déviations from the regular round.

P. 35, 1, 2. Allure properly means the ' going ' of a horse, his fashion of stepping, pace, etc. Transferred to men, it means gênerai conduct and beha\dour.

P. 37, 1. 2. Patito, Italian for lover.

1. 4. Le plus ancien des dieux. Love, according to certain Greeks.

1. 8. Parthénope. Naples (?), possibly, because of the Italian Opéra. But, as has been seen, Quinet's words in his sentimental moods must not be pressed too close. Parthénope was also a siren, and the référence may be to this.

1. 17. Les inscriptions. It is difficult to assign the exact référence to this. We do not generally consider our monuments or tkeir epigraphs a strong point.

P. 38, 1. 8. Fort l'intérêt. ' Ferj/ rmich the interest.'
