1. 23. The bridge of Arcola (the scène of a famous victory of Napoléon over the Austrians, on Nov. 17, 1796) crosses the Adige about fifteen miles from Verona. The Austrians défend ed it for four days of desperate fighting, and only retired when taken in the rear.
