PEEFACE
This édition of Renan^s Sœur Henriette has been undertaken in the hope that it may appeal to the occasional teacher who desires, even in the comparatively early stages of study, to interrupt the usual rather unsubstantial diet of fiction by putting into the hands of his students a pièce of literature that is représentative of the best side of French genius. Kenan's little sketch is a genuine classic, dealing with mattersof serions import and furnishing a délicate intellectual pleasure, and it is written in a style of unpretending yet exqnisite simplicity — so simple that it offers perhaps as little difficulty as any nineteenth-century prose.
In the vocabulary words identical, or nearly so, hâve been freely omitted ; and no attempt has been made to obviate salutary effort on the part of the Btudent in adapting the generic définition of a word to a particular passage.
The notes are mainly devoted to elucidating the allusions in the text. The geographical notes are intended to encourage rather than preclude the use of an atlas.
The text remains complète and unmodified.
