ALPHONSE N. TAN DAELL,

Professor of Modem Languages, Massachusetts Institute of

Technology, formerly Director of Modem Languages

in the Boston High and Latin Schools.

In order to meet the demands created by the latest developments in the study of the Modem Languages, we hâve planned four new séries of books for the study of French and German.

The names Elément ary, Tntermediate, and Univer- 8ity indicate the gênerai purpose of three of thèse séries, which will be completed later by a preparatory course for children.

Recognizing that various methods of teaching the Modéra Languages exist, and that instructors hâve legitimate préférences as to the mode of instruction they wish to adopt, it will be our aim to include in our séries whatever is best in différent directions, thus offering a broad choice to teachers.

As in the opinion of many it is désirable that much reading be done by the pupil from the very first, and that it should vary according to the needs of classes, a large number of books will be made accessible.

AU possible discrétion will be used in the sélection of texts, while at the same tiine the endeavor will be to represent adequately and systematically the important periods of the literature. Carefully chosen historical and scientific

texts will also be presented as the need for them becomes manifest.

The Elementary Séries will consist of First Books in the languages and appropriate exercises to accompany them ; also of Readers and a few easy or adapted texts.

The Intermediate Séries will consist of Grammars, more advanced books, and a large number of texts.

The University Séries will consist of material for the most advanced study of the language. Annotated texts will be preceded by introductions of a literary and historical character. The texts of the différent periods of the language, which will be published, will présent a séries of spécimens of the literature from the présent time back to the earliest stages of the language. And in like manner a conuected history of the literature will be formed by the introductions to each volume, which will be supplemented by a spécial notice of each author.

In this séries some texts unaccompanied by notes of any kind will be published soon, to meet the intermediate demand.

For the two other séries, also, a number of specially qualified instructors in French and German hâve already taken the work in hand, and a few publications will be ready for the beginning of the next school year.

The publishers, while they wish not to proceed with any undue haste, are desirous that the wants of instructors in Modem Languages may be fully met by presenting to them the best possible éditions, and as varied material as modéra needs demand. As an assistance toward this they invite suggestions with regard to the publication of any texts or other works connected with the study of Modem Languages in schools, collèges, and universities. Such communication may be addressed to Professor van Daell, 105 Irving Street, Cambridge, Mass.
