VERY BELOVED BRETHERN,

We come to bring to your notice the Encyelieal 4 diem illum luetissimum of His Holiness the Nore Pontiff, Pius X, proclaiming a Jubilee.

In this encyclical, the Pope exhorts us to a most

tender devotion towards the Immaculate Virgin and demonstrates to us how she leads as it were necessarily to Jesus all souls and hearts. Pius X says so in express terms : ^ For ean anyone fail to see that there 1s no surer or more direct road than by Mary for uniting all mankind in Christ and obtain ng through Him the perfect adoption of sons, that we may be holy and immaeulate in the sight of God ?”.,., “Since Divine Providence has been pleased that we should have the Man-God through Mary, who conceived him by the Holy Ghost and bore him on her breast, it only remains for us to receive Christ from the hands of Mary.".... * That through the Virgin, and through her more than through any other means, we have offe red us a way of re eaching the knowledge of Jesus Christ, eannot be doubted when it is remembered that with her alone of all others Jesus was for thirty years united, as à son is usually united with a mother, in the closest ties of intimacy and domestie life". ... “Nobody ever knew Chirist so profoundly as she did, and nobody ean ever be more cometent as a guide and teacher of the knowledge of Christ. Henee it follows, as we have already pointed out, that the Virgin is more powerful than all others as a means for uniting mankind with ( ‘hrist.”... “Since it is through Mary that we attain to the knowledge of Christ, through Mary also we most easily obtain that life of which 1 ‘hrist is the souree and origin.’

In order to understand that teaching, it suffices to remember that Mary is the Mother of the Son of God, for itis of her that the Saviour was born, and she it is, also says the Pope, who‘ ‘thus prepared the Vietim for the Salvation of men; but hers was also the office of

tending and nourishing that Victim, and at the appointed time presenting Him for the saerifice....and when the supreme hour of the Son eame, beside the cross of Jesus there stood Mary his Mother, not merely occupied in contemplating the eruel spectacle, but rejoicing that her zu Son was offered for the salvation of mankind."

."From this eommunity of will and suffering between Christ and Mary, also says Pius X, she merited to become most worthily the Repar: atrix of the lost world and Dispensatrix of ‘all the gifts that our Saviour purchased for us by His death and by His Blood.”

Doubtless, Jesus Christ is the only Mediator between God and men, the source of all graces, “but Mary, as St. Bernard justly remarks, is the channel.”

Our confidence in Mary ean never be too great. Mary has been too much identified wijh Jesus upon earth, and Jesus has obeyed her too well herebelow to refuse her any grace that she may beg for us Let us then go to her as a child to his mother ; let us ask her every "good which we really stand in need of, and our prayer will be granted, for, as St. Bernard assures us, “ no one ever invoked her in vain.”

According to Blessed Louis Marie de Montfort, that one will imitate better the most holy and immaculate Virgin Mary, secure more fully her ali-powerful intercession, unite himself more quickly and entirely with Jesus, who “will give himself entirely and for ever to Mary in order the better to be through her entirely and for ever to Jesus Christ, living he obitu: lly in a full, entire and perfect dependence on her will, after the example of the Son of God at Nazareth “ and he was subject to them,” ( Luke II, 51.)

How we shall make that entire gift of ourselves, is thus taught us by Blessed de Montfort : For that purpose, we choose a day on which we give to Mary, in a solemn and perpetual eonseeration, our body and soul, our organs and faculties, all our goods both material wud spiritual, and even the whole value of our good

This is precisely what is done by the members of

the Confraternity of Mary, Queen of Hearts, which we established on the 25th Mareh 1899. They practise thereby the most sine re, perfect encouraging and certain devotion to the Blessed Virgin.

Pius X hopes that, on the occasion of the Jubilee of the Immaeulate Coneeption, the faithful as well as the clergy will inerease their devotion to the spotless Virgin, that they will render her more solemn homages and feel inclined to a more perfect imitation of her virtues. In order to atimulate their zeal for her honour and and to further enliven their love for her, he aged to grant the whole universe an extrae in the form of a Jubilee.

This Jubilee we to-day proclaim with unspeakable joy, happy #8 we are to think that|every one of you, very beloved brethren, will make it & duty for himself

"Those who might wish to make two or three visits on the same day, should remember that it is obligatory to leave the church after each visit. At each of those visits, one must pray piously for the liberty and exaltation of the Catholic Chureh and the Apostolie See. for the extirpation of heresies and the conversion of sinners, for the concord of all christian princes and the peace and unity of all the faithful, an | according to the intentions of the Sovereign Pontitl ;
