Pagre 128* — i. La Saint-Charlemagne. The féminine article is due to the fact that "fête" is understood. Charlemagne, who died Jan. 28, 81 4, was long, though erroneously, regarded as the founder of the University of Paris. On this account, Louis XI, in 1480, ordered the day to be celebrated in the University. This eustom was later introduced into the secondary schools of the country. Only the best pupils had a right to take part in the banquet usually given. The custom gradually fell into disuse and was formally aboiished in 1895.
