Scène I
47 I — Emportements: Transports of indignation.
47 3 — Eclairé : Penetrated into.
47 7 — Le : Them. Refers to people.
47 8 — M'asservit : Subjects to me.
47 11 — A son gré : According to her own pleasure. See page 13, line 2.
47 18 — Je n'attendais pas (trouver or rencontrer) : I did
not expect to meet with.
48 10 — Me rénondez-vous bien qu'il m'ait défait : Do you
quite guarantee that he has rid me of.
48 22 — Il suffit : It is enough, no other reasons are
necessary.
49 I — Pour jamais, instead of à jamais : For ever.
Jamais means prop. ever, but when joined to a négative, and even without the négative (which is understood), it means never. Il le fait plus que jamais, he does it more than ever ; Il ne le fait jamais, he never does it ; Le faitesvous quelques fois? Non, jamais. Do you sometimes do it ? No, never.
49 16— Tantôt : Just now. Notice. — Je le verrai tantôt, I shall see him by-and-by (in the course of the day). A tantôt is used instead of au revoir : Depuis tantôt six mois, some six months since. Tantôt repeated expresses alternative : Tantôt l'un tantôt l'autre, sometimes one ^ometimes the other. Le tantôt has the meaning of the afternoon.
49 19 — A travers : Through. Compare with au travers ;
the latter is always fcllowed by the préposition
de ; à travers is not.
