PREFACE

Thîs volume being but a continuation of the first French book the author bas not deemed it necessary to repeat the description of the Berlitz Method.

In the first book are taught the expressions that are indispensable for ordinary conversations such as are needed during a journey in France. Only a few abstract terms and but the most necessary grammatical f orms are introduced.

In this second book the vocabulary is gradually increased by the addition of abstract words and idiomatic phrases, introduced in such a manner that the pupil will readily understand them through their connection, or that the teacher will find in the contextthe material necessary for the explanations.

The teacher is to give the lessons in a way similar to the one employed in the second part of the first book ; i. e, he should first read a few lines himself to give the proper pronunciation, then let the student repeat the same, correcting him ; the teacher then asks a great many questions like those in the exercises and the preceding lessons, adding new words whenever the context is favorable, and finally lets the students repeat f rom memory the sentences read.

As home work the students should write the exercises and learn ail the lessons of the first part by heart after having had them in the class.

It will also be useful sometimes to give simple dictations and to hâve the conversational pièces imitated in the lessons between several students.

In this new édition we hâve aaaed consideràbly to the value of the book by using larger type for the exercises. There is no change, however, in the text.
