c'était à Troyes que s'était conclu le traité

See introductory note to p. 93.

124. — 3. Charles VII fut oint. Clovis was baptized at Rheims, Christmas Day 496, by Saint Remigius, bishop of Rheims. Louis le Débonnaire was crowned here in 816, and all the Capetian kings to the Revolution have been crowned here except Hugues Capet and Henri IV. According to a legend the celebrated sainte ampoule full of oil was brought from Heaven by a dove for the coronation of Clovis. During the Revolution this vessel was shattered, but a portion was kept, in which some of the sacred oil is said to have remained, this was placed in a new sainte ampoule used at the coronation of Charles X in 1825. The

possession of this vessel probably led to the choice of Rheims as the place of coronation.
