PREFACE

The text of this édition of le Médecin malgré lui is that of the Grands Écrivains de la France séries. The orthography, however, has been modernized, and in a few cases the variants given by Despois and Mesnard hâve been introduced into the text. In several instances, on account of the coarseness of the humor, a word or a Une has been omitted, and four short scènes hâve been entirely stricken out.

This édition is intended for preparatory schools, as well as for early reading in collèges.

In preparing introduction, notes, and vocabulary I hâve profited by previous éditions and translations.
