I. Tartarin chez lui

1. Tarascon lies on the east bank of the Rhône about thirteen miles below Avignon and eight miles above Arles. It is connected with Beaucaire by a suspension bridge. The jealous rivalry of thèse two towns gives rise to a vein of humor, which frequently crops o'ut in Daudet's romances. Its name is traditionally derived from the Tarasquey a dragon-like monster which, in prehistoric times, ravaged the adjacent country.

2. Savoyards. The mountaînous parts of Savoy between France, Switzerland, and Italy hâve been noted for centuries for the great number of musicians, small traders, and artisans who hâve gone thence to neighboring countries to eam a living.
