18. sous-préfecture : county-town, France is divided for administration into départements^ each presided over by a préfet ; and each département is divided into arrondissements^ each under a sous-préfet; their central offices and chief towns would be called respectively préfectures and sous-préfectures. In gênerai, therefore, the départements and arrondissements would correspond to states and counties in this country.
