Conte Historique Louis XIV (1643-1715) represents the triumph of absolute monarchy. During his long reign, important conquests were made under the leadership of his Minister of War, M. de Louvois. In 1648, as a resuit of the Peace of VVestphalia, Alsace became French for the second time, after seven centuries of German domination. Stra^ourg, however, remained a free city, but became a part of the domain of France in i68z.
