Conte Patriotique As a resnlt of the Treaty of Peace after the Franco- Prussian War, Alsace and Lorraine, two French provinces west of the Rhine, were ceded to Germany. Many thousands left thèse provinces to take up their life in France, but many, many more remained in the land of their fathers. They ànd their children were compelled to hide deep down in their hearts their love for their mother country, and, like the flag in this story, they awaited the return of their beloved France.
