ENGLISH POEMS

Editcd by EDWARD CHAUNCEY BALDWIN, Ph. D., and HARRY G. PAUL, A. M., Assistant Professors of Ënglish Literature in the University of Illinois.

THIS volume is designed to combine measurable completeness with an amount of cditing suiEcient for supplying needed help to the collège student, and for furnishing material forclass room work.

% In the sélection of poems the primaiy aim has bcen to include the most représentative work of the chief British pcets, from Chaucer to Tennyson, with a view to prcsenting material which should also be représentative of the successive periods of English literary history, and, within certain limitations, of the chief types of poetry. ^ Throughout an attempt has been made to avoid the purely informational type of annotation, and to furnish, wherever possible, suggestions that will enable the student to supply hb own notes. Similarly, the questions that accompany the notes are designed to stimulate and suggest thought on the part of both teacher and student, rather than to make thinking unnecessary on the part of either. ^ The questions train the student to examine idlelligently a poem for himself. They are sufficiendy advanced without being ovemice, and are so worded as to recognize divergence of taste and to cultivate the student' s independent appréciation. The notes présent références to the best guides, introductory books, and great critical essays, and stimulate the student to leam something of the éléments of literary criticism.
