PREFACE
The distinctions of the différent parts of speech are indicated in the Vocabulary. The book aims to give the pupil merely a supply of familiar words, especially of nouns, and a fair acquaintance with genders. For more advanced pnpils a Second Reader is in préparation, in which spécial attention will be paid to the tenses of the yerbs and the principal rules of grammar.
The following might prove a good method of using the book:
1. To read in French an unprepared pièce, in order to hâve the pupil's undivided attention given to the pronunciation without regard to the sensé. Let it be read oyer by varions pupils as often as time will permit.
2. To hâve the pupil prépare for the lesson in translation either by writing ont and by committing to memory ail the words that appear in a specified portion of the book (which is the better way), or by writing ont a literal translation.
3. To hâve the same portion translated viva voce in the class, and to test the pupil's familiarity with it by citing the leading words and short phrases in English, and liaving them translated by the pupil into French without référence to the book.
The shorter pièces of poetry are especially suitable for being committed to memory.
