L'EPAGNEUL ET LE CAMÉLÉON
TRADUIT PAE L'EDITBUB.
Erre dans la prairie et puis dans le vallon ;
Et de moi le beau sexe était fort partisan ;
But Jove, v^lio hâtes the lîar's ways, At once eut short my prosp'rous days ; And, sentenced to retain my nature, Transform'd me to this crawling créature :
Doom'd to a life obscure and mean, I wander in the sylvan scène :
For Jove the heart alone regards ; He punishes what man rewards.
How différent is tby case and mine !
With men, at least, you sup and dine ; While I, condemn'd to thinnest fare, Like those I flatter' d, feed on air.
TO A SEAGULL.
BT GEBALD ORimN.
White bird of the tempest ! ! heautiful thing, With the hosom of snow, and the motionless wing, Now sweeping the hillow, now floating on high, Now hathing thy plumes in the light of the sky ; Now poising o'er océan thy délicate form, Now breasting the sûrge with thy bosom so warm ; Now darting aloft, with a heavenly scorn, Now shooting along, like a ray of the morn, Now lost in the folds of the cloud-curtained dôme, Now floating abroad like a flake of the foam, Now silently poised o'er the war of the main, Like the spirit of charity brooding o'er pain ; Now gliding with pinion ail silently furled, Like an angel descending to comfort the world !
Me condamnant à garder ma nature, Ooupa court tout à coup à ma longue imposture :
Transformé comme je le suis, Je me cache sous Therbe et vis comme je puis ;
