" Is it wbere tbe feathery palm-trees rise, And the date grows ripe under sonny skies f Or 'midst the green isiands of glittering seas,* Where fragr^nt forests perfume the breeze ; And strange bright birds on their starry wings Bear tbe rich bues of ail glorious tbings ?" — "Not there, not tbere, my ebild !"
" Is it far away in some région old, Where tbe rivers wander o*er sands of gold, Where tbe bùming rays of tbe ruby sbine, And tbe diamond lîgbts up tbe secret mine, And the pearls gleam fortb from tbe coral strand,- Is it tbere, sweet mother, that better land ?" ^ — " Not tbere, not tbere, my child !
" Eye bath not seen it, my gentle boy ; Ear bath not heard its dcep songs of joy ; Dreams cannot picturc a world so fair ; Sorrow and death may not enter tbere ; Time dotb not breathe on its fadeless bloom ; Far beyond the clouds, and beyond the tomb, It is tbere, it is there, my child !"
