I. NaruraL History

The ultimate source, no doubt, of the bulk of Solinu's information on this head is the Historia Naturalis of the elder Pliny. Brunetto refers to the latter by name as his authority on one occasion (Tresor, p. 182, 6 1), but it is evident that he derived a great part of his material, not from Pliny direct, but from Solinus, since he repeatedly makes mention of details which appear in the same connexion in the Collectanea, but are not to be found in the Historia Naturalis.

In tracing Brunetto’s obligations to Solinus in this section of his work it will be convenient to follow the arrangement he has himself adopted, which seems to a certain extent to be alphabetical.

1. Even this mention, according to Sundby, is made at second-hand from Isidorus.

2. See Sundby's remarks on $ 2 of this chapter (pp. 134-6; ed. Renier).

3: In this section these numerals refer to the paragraphs of the chapier, not of the page 28 hitherto. Br. having for the most part borrowed consecutive passages from Sol. in this section, instead of detached fragments as in the geographical section, the bare numerical references will be found sufficient for their identification. The paragraphs of the Collectanea are given in the order in which the corresponding passages occur in the Tresor. (See note 12.)

4. Aspides and prialis are evidently corruptions of the Latin dipsas and Chylonale.
