C'est le fameux chancelier Michel de Lospital (c est ainsi qu'il

-9* avait l'habitude d'orthographier son nom) qui fonda l'illustre bibliothèque dont il est ici question.

Il mourut en 1573, léguant ses livres et manuscrits à son petit-fils et filleul, Michel Hurault de Lospital, qui devint à son tour chancelier de France en 1589, et mourut en 1592. Il agrandit encore la bibliothèque héréditaire et la transmit à sa famille, où elle demeura longtemps ; c'est à ce titre que nous la mentionnons ici.
