III— INDEFINITE ARTICLE (B

111. (See p. 317, No. III; pp. 297-298, Nos. 4 and 8; p. 300, No. 22).

The différence between this Indefinite Article and the previous one (No. II above) is very slight: quelque is used in a restrictive way, in the singular, as to quality; in the plural, as to numbers, e.g.:

(a) quelque fauteuil (some kind of an armchair)

(6) quelques fauteuils (a few armchairs)

IV— PARTITIVE ADJECTIVE

112. (See p. 317, No. IV; pp. 297-298, Nos. 4 and 11; p. 300, No. 22. See also p. 317 No. I, G., (Sing.).

(1) The partitive adjective applies only to nouns that are in the singular; it restricts the meaning of those nouns as to quantity, e.g. :

du pain (some (quantity of) bread) de la viande (some " " meat) de Peau (some " " water) the above nouns (bread, meat, water) dénote substances, and not any individual objects; the partitive adjective modifies those nouns in restricting the quantity of the substance they represent.

(2) The folio wing two examples illustra te the différence between some (partitive) and some (indefinite) :

some bread (substance) use the partitive adjective some armchair (indiv. obj.) use the indefinite article

(3) A glance at the French Articles and Pronominal Adjectives (p. 317) shows that the words representing the partitive adjective in its Nominative and Accusative case are the same as those used in the Genitive of the Definite Article (see words printed in red) ; as a matter of fact, the Genitive case of ail those articles and adjectives, when used as direct object (No. IV excepted) conveys under circums tances the idea expressed by the English pronominal adjectives some, or any, e.g.:

(a) Démonstrative adj.: de ce, de cet, de cette, de ces (Gen.): le prix de ce pain the price of that bread (GEN.)

mangez de ce pain eat some of that bread (PARTIT.)

ma part de cet argent my share of that money (GEN.) prenez de cet argent take some of that money (PARTIT.) la couleur de ces fleurs the colour of those flowers (GEN.) elle aura de ces fleurs she will get some of those flowers
