Answer the following questions

(a) Why is the vowel e of the Infinitive ending -er (e), of the verbs

commencer, annoncer, répéter, and aboyer no longer sounded when those Infinitives are combined with the endings of the Future and Conditional tenses? Consult p. 9, No. 12(c), and footnote f on that same page.

(b) Why does the vowel e of the Infinitive ending -er (e), of the

verb préférer, instead of becoming silent in the Future and Conditional forms, as in the verbs under (a) above, take on the sound (0)? (50prefer0re, . . . nuprefer0rô, . . . ; $0prefer0re, . . . ; ) Consult p. 10, No. 14 (c.)

(c) Why does y of the Infinitive aboyer change into i in the Future

and Conditional tenses? Consult p. 69, No. 1, and remember the correct answer to (a) above; notice, however, that the change of y into i, in this case, does not occur before a mute e ending, but before a mute e which is not any longer part of a verbal ending (i.e., of the Infinitive ending).
