Page L — I. La bataille de la Marne, the battle of September 6-IO, 1914, which stopped the German advance on Paris. A French army advancing from Paris against the German right flank on the Ourcq river forced the German armies to make a general retreat northward to the lines on the Aisne river. Generals Joffre, Foch, Galliéni and Maunoury must be honored, among others, for that dever and decisive move. The Marne is a river flowing from east to northwest, joining the Seine a little below Paris. It gives its name to several French departments.
2. La Champagne, the province of Champagne, with its capital Troyes, extends from the Aisne river in the north to south of the Marne, and eastward to the Meuse. It includes the departments of Aube, Haute-Marne, Marne and Ardennes. The cathedral city of Rheims is comprised within its limits. Champagne is famous for its wines.
3. Joffre, Césaire- Joseph- Jacques Joffre, born January 12, 1852, the victor of the Marne. After a brilliant career as a French military engineer, Joffre was made chief of staff of the French armies, a position which he held at the beginning of the war. His famous ordre du jour marked the turning of the tide and the beginning of the German defeat. The former German Kronprinz is quoted as saying that the war was lost for Germany at the Marne.
4. le Chant du départ, a patriotic song of the French revolution. It was composed in 1794 by Marie- Joseph Chénier, with music by Méhul.
