23. Silbermann, a Strasburg family celebrated for their skiU in making organs and pianos. The best known member was Joh. Gottfried (1683-17 53). His nephew Andréas (17 12-1783) was famous as a builder of organs, and another nephew, Heinrich (1727- 1799) as a piano -forte maker.

24. Danse des Morts, also called Danse Macabre. A kind of morality or allegorical représentation intended to remind the living of the power of death. It became very popular in the middle âges, and is seen in pictures, tapestry and bas-reliefs. It was most popular in Germany. Holbein left 53 sketches for engravings on this snbject.
