north-west of Nantes, was fought, on the i5th of Nov., 1793, a bloody battle between the Vendéens under Fleuriot de la Fleurayaie and the Republicans under Marceau, Westermann and Kléber. The Vendéens were utterly routed with great loss, and never took the field again.

26. Panthéon, the chapel erected over the tomb of Saint Geneviève (d. 512), the patron saint of Paris, having fallen into decay was removed about the middle of the last century and a magnificent church designed by Soufflot was erected on the spot, and completed in 1790. The new church was also dedicated to St. Geneviève, but in 1791 the Convention resolved to couvert it into a mémorial temple, which they named the " Panthéon," with the inscription, '''• Aux grands hommes la

patrie reconnaissante." By a decree of 1857 the original name Eglise de Ste. Geneviève was revived, and the church set apart for public worship, but the old inscription remains and the name Panthéon is generally used.

In the crypt were buried Mirabeau and Marat (their bodies were afterward removed by order of the Convention), Voltaire and Rousseau (their bodies too were removed after the Restoration).
