77. Catilina est aux portes de Rome, et Von délibère, the infamous Roman conspirator (108-62 B. c), has already been alluded to by Mirabeau, p. 40. The référence in the text is to the speech of Porcius Cato, in the Senate, quoted by Sallust in his Conspiracy of Catiline (cap. 52): " Dux hostium supra caput est : vos cunctamini etiam nunc, quid intra mœnia adprensis hostibus faciatis ? . . . sed undique circumventi

properandum." The conspiracy of Catiline forms the subject of a play by Crébillon the elder, produced at the Théâtre Français, 1748, and of one by Alexandre Dumas, 1848.

78. V Oeil de boeuf ^ a large waiting-room in the palace at Versailles, next to the king's chamber, so called from the round window by which it was lighted. There was also a room of the same name in the Tuileries.
