La Bataille de la Marne: On August 3, 1914, Germany declared war on France and at once invaded Belgium to force her way to Paris. After being unexpectedly delayed a few weeks by the dogged résistance of the small Belgian army, the Germans swept the British and French troops before them and reached the banks of the river Marne (northeastern France) in the first days of September. There the French commander- in- chief, General Joffre, ordered the retreating armies “ to get killed on the spot rather than fall back.” The battle lasted from September 5 to September 12, with the resuit that the defeated German troops had to beat a general retreat as far north as the river Aisne, and Paris was saved. (See map, page 10.)
