APPENDIX I
TEXTUAL NOTES
^\HE text employed for this édition is the revised Paris édition of 1787. That of the Episodes is the version published in 1912. The spelling has been modernised throughout. Beckford employed the eighteenth century French spelling, e.g. “o” for “a” in “étaient,” the omission of the “t” in the plural of présent participles and of “p” in such words as “temps.”
Except for the passage on p. 8 and the correction of one or two misprints, no other alteration has been made in the text.
In the original Lausanne version after the phrase “commença la sienne de la manière suivante,” there follows:
Histoire des deux princes amis, Alasi & Jironz, enfermés dans le palais souterrain.
Histoire du prince Kalilah & de la princesse ^ulkais, sa sœur, enfermés dans le palais souterrain.
Histoire du prince Berkiarekh enfermé dans le palais souterrain.
Histoire du prince... enfermé dans le palais souterrain.
Le quatrième prince en étoit au milieu de son récit, quand il fut interrompu, etc.
In the Paris édition only three épisodes are mentioned:
Histoire des deux Princes amis, Alasi & Firoux, enfermés dans le palais souterrein.
Histoire du Prince Borkiarokh, enfermé dans le palais souterrein.
Histoire du Prince Kalilah & de la Princesse Zulkais, enfermés dans le palais souterrein.
Le troisième Prince, etc.
Appendix I
As the last and incomplète story is related by the Princess Zulkaïs, I hâve amended the text on p. 153 to run, instead of “Le troisième Prince,” “La Princesse” followed by “elle” for “il.”
It may be of interest to State that the name Vathek (Watik) apparently gave Beckford considérable trouble. “Vatteck,” “Vathec,” “Vathek” and “Vatek” ail appear in the correspondence, while on the cover of the transcript referred to as “The Vision” appears the sentence: “To the Translator: N. B. If the letter h should be found to remain anywhere in Vatek or Garatis — don’t forget to omit it.”
