Fano : a small islaud to the north-west of Corfu

5. 5. du Parthénon : the great Doric temple of Minerva on the Acropolis at Athens, probabîy the most perfect spécimen of Greek architecture. It was erected, under the supervision of Phidias by Ictinus and Callicrates, entirely of Pentelic marble, with eight pillars in the width and fifteen on each side (not counting those at the corners). This magnificent relie of Periclean times stood little injured by weather or war iintil 1687, when it was used as a Turkish magazine, and a bomb from a Venetian mortar bursting within, the explosion reduced the building to its présent ruined condition. Part of the frieze of the Parthénon, some statues, and the famous Elgin marbles are in the British Muséum.
