Traduction en vers par J. Rutter, dont le nom est au bas de l'épître dédicatoire adressée à Edouard, comte de Dorset, lord-chambellan. Le même auteur fit paraître, en 1640, une traduction de la _Vraie Suite du Cid_, de l'abbé Desfontaines, qu'il intitula: _The Second Part of The Cid._

Malgré l'empressement mis par un poëte anglais à traduire le _Cid_, l'année même de sa publication, le tempérament britannique ne paraît pas s'être accommodé aux passions toutes méridionales du héros espagnol. Pepys raconte qu'il assista, le 1er décembre 1662, à la représentation du _Cid_, au Cokpit, et que la pièce, bonne pour la lecture, lui parut à la scène «une fort sotte chose (a most dull thing)». _Diary and Correspondence of Samuel Pepys_; the sixth Edition; London, 1858, 4 vol. in-12.

Simple imitation du _Cid_, dans laquelle l'auteur s'est proposé d'éviter une partie des fautes que le goût français avait, prétend-il, fait commettre à Corneille.

Cette pièce, imprimée séparément, a été réunie au _Bell's British Theatre_, t. XVe (London, 1797, in-8): elle a été également reproduite dans les oeuvres de Colley Cibber, dont la meilleure édition est celle de _Londres_, 1777, 5 vol. in-12, avec portr.
