ÂLTHOUGH the Editer has strîven to make thîs book attractive to children, he has not întended that its nsefalness shonld be confined to them alone. It is designed for a " Eeader," to accompany any primary French " Instructionbook/* and to be nsed in altemation with the nsual elementary spécial exercises. For this purpose, pièces containing the simplest words and easiest construction were necessary, and such can be fonnd to best advantage only in the literatnre of the yonng. The Editor ventnres the opinion that the mature pupil will find the little pièces contained in this volmne fully as attractive as tfie usual string of disconnected sentences, and no less nsefnl.
The greatvariety of the contents, and the constant change from serions to divertîng, will do much to prevent the book's becoming wearisome. Moreover, the pièces are so easy that any beginner, by aid of the Yocabulary, can make a literal translation. Care has been taken to arrange the pièces progressively, especially in the second part of the book.
AU the words are given in the Vocabulary as they appear in the book, with an idiomatic translation only where a literal one would not give the true sensé. More than a Miterai translation can hardly be expected from the beginner ; aor should he be trammelled by many grammatical rules.
