PREFACE

The distinctions of the différent parts of speech are indicated in the Vocabulary. The book aims to give the pupil merely a supply of familiar words, especially of nouns, and a fair acquaintance with genders. For more advanced pupils a Second JReader is in préparation, in which spécial attention will be paid to the tenses of the yerbs and the principal raies of grammar.

The foUowing might prove a ^ood method of nsing the book:

1. To read in French an unprepared pièce, in order to hâve the pupil's undivided attention given to the pronunciation without regard to the sensé. Let it be read over by varions pupils as often as time wiU permit.

2. To hâve the pupil prépare for the lesson in translation eitàer by writing ont and by committing to memory aU tàxe words that appear in a specified portion of the book (which is the better way), or by writing ont a literal translation.

3. To hâve the same portion translated viva voce in the class, and to test the pupil's familiarity with it by citing the leading words and short phrases in English, and having them ixanslated by the pupil into French without référence to the book.

The shorter pièces of poetry are especially suitable for being committed to memory.

U POniE ET SES POÏÏSSmS.

"Petits, venez ;

"PetitsI petitsi petitsl petitsi"

Les voici qui viennent en trottinant devant leur mère.

Ils sont: un, deux, trois, quatre, cinq, six, sept, huit, neuf, dix.

Dix, ils y sont tous,

Tous bien alertes, bien gentils.

"Tenez, petits, mangez."

Ils ont un même duvet, un beau duvet jaune clair.

Ce sont des frères et des sœurs ; dix frères et sœurs du même âge.

Quelle gentille petite famille !

Voyez, comme ils se pressent, se poussent, se renversent, marchent les uns sur les autres.

Mauvais frères! Pourquoi vous disputer? Il y a pour tous.

La mère les regarde, fait le tour de la bande, rappelle ceux qui s'écartent.

Oh ! la bonne mère ! Elle ne mange pas, elle.

Petits égoïstes, laissez donc quelque chose pour votre mère!

Ils ne lui laissent rien I

La poule s'éloigne en faisant entendre son gloussement ;

Les poussins la suivent.

Elle leur cherche de la nourriture.

Si elle n'en trouve pas, elle gratte la terre.

Dès qu'elle a découvert quelque chose, elle appelle ses petits qui accourent aussitôt.

Par la pluie, par le froid, elle les rassemble sous ses ailes.

Quand elle aperçoit un oiseau de proie, elle expose sa vie pour les défendre.

Elle a beaucoup de courage, parce qu'elle a beaucoup d'amour.

ÉNIGME

np'AS bien vu le coq petite ;
