Christian VIT, King of Denmark, bom in 1749, succeeded his father Frederick V. in 1766. He married inthe sameyear Caroline Matilda, a sister of George III., King of England. His own physician Struensée, whom hehad made a minister in 1770, soon took a great command over him ; but after two years Struensée, being suspected of high treason, was put to death, and the whole authority passed into the hands of the Queen-Dowager, Julia Maria of Brunswick. The end of Christian's reign was unfortunate : Copenhagen was bombarded and takenby the English in 1807. Christian died at Rendsburg (Holstein) in 1808.
