1. 5. assignats, i. e. paper money issued by the Revolutionary Government in order to refiU the treasuiy, and guai-anteed bjthe lands confîscated from the Church and the émigrés. Its currency was enforced by the Reign of Terror, but when afterwards the increasing number of assignats made their payment more and more unlikely their value gradually dropped, until they became practically worthless. César Birotteau had got rid of his assignats before their dépréciation.
