1. 48. vous fêtez l'Empereur ! The 15th of August is the feast of the ' Assomption,' celebrated with much solemnity in France since the reign of Louis XIII. Napoleon I (born on August 15, 1769) had chosen this day for that of his own 'fête,' kept as a national holiday.
1. 54. Mon bouquet a trois couleurs. In 18 17 the Indépendant was suppressed by the authorities for an article on the ' Salon' of that year, describing the portrait of a child holding some blue flowers. This was taken to be an allusion to the ' Roi de Rome ' or ' Duc de Reichstadt.' The portrait was really that of a Bavarian child. The mistake was acknowledged in due course, and the paper allowed to appear again under the new title of Constitutionnel.
