un objet charmant. Cf. note to La Bonne Vieille, L
I. 26. un très grand seigneur nowveau-né. Neither here nor in the next verse is it necessary to see allusions to any particular persons of the time.
II. 29-30. The ' très grand seigneur nouveau-né ' must surely have been a precocious babe !
1. 42. D'un riche nous perdons V appui. This is no doubt an allusion and a compliment to Béranger's intimate friend Jacques Laffitte ; not that the latter had died, but the words of the text were bound to bring the great-hearted banker into the minds of Béranger's readers.
1. 51. ne marque. Used intransitively marquer has the sense of ' to make a lasting impression,' ' to be conspicuous.'
After Béranger's death Eugène Pelletan published a fierce attack on the poet under the title of Une étoile fiante.
Le Vieux Drapeau. (Page 59.)
Probably written in 1820. In the month of May of that year, during the stormy discussion on the new law respecting electoral suffrage, La Fayette had delivered a passionate speech in defence of the tricolour flag, which had caused a great sensation.
The tricolour flag had come into existence in 1789, when the white colour of the Bourbons was placed between the blue and red of the city of Paris ; it had been the flag of the Republic and the Empire, and was hated by the Bourbons. After the ' Hundred Days,' during which it again ousted the flag of the monarchy, it was considered as a ' signe de ralliement séditieux,' the display of which it was proposed at the end of 1 81 5 to make a capital offence. Although this bill was defeated by a narrow majority, the veterans who possessed and concealed old imperial flags incurred considerable risk, at a time when delation was rampant.
Béranger's printers hesitated to include in the edition of 182 1 a song which was evidently open to the charge of sedition ; it appeared, however, preceded by the following conciliating lines : l Cette chanson n'exprime que le vœu d'un soldat qui désire voir la Charte constitutionnellement placée sous la sauvegarde du drapeau de Fleurus, de Marengo et d'Austerlitz.
For the complete edition of his songs, Béranger wrote later
1. 2. Je viens de me voir entouré. It is a veteran of the imperial armies who is speaking.
