Souvenirs d'Enfance. (Page 119.)
Written in July, 1831, at Péronne, which Béranger's correspondence shows him to have re-visited in the years 1806, 1809, 1810, 1811, 1831, 1833, and 1835.
In 1 83 1 he had not been in Péronne for twenty years, and he writes on the 19th of July to his cousin Forget : 'C'est pour voir encore une fois mes chers et bons parents que je fais ce voyage. However, on the 27th he writes from Péronne to Mme Cauchois-Lemaire : ■ Vous avais-je parlé de mon voyage en Picardie ? . . At the end of July there was to be a solemn celebration of the anniversary of the ' Journées de Juillet,' and Béranger would inevitably have been made the object of a demonstration, a thing he was always averse to, as he liked to 1 ménager sa popularité.' He was about to be brought before the public also in a vaudeville (produced at the Palais-Royal) entitled Béranger, ou le Tailleur et la Fée, in which occurred the refrain : —
He writes to Mme Lemaire on the 6th of August : ( J'ai vu qu'on m'avait joué sur le théâtre.
