Lieutenant Laré was as prudent as he was brave. At the beginning of the campaign he had captured some cannon from the Prussians. Then he was given about a hundred men. With these men, his scouts, he seemed to be everywhere at once, outplaying the enemy’s tricks. He saved the army several times. One morning his general sent for him and told him to go to the aid of the army at Blainville. It had been freezing for several days; the snow was falling; the ground was covered with it. At nightfall the detachment set out. They were afraid of meeting a swarm of the Prussian soldiers. Two men marched ahead. Then came ten men with their lieutenant. The rest came after. From time to time they halted and left behind them a white phantom in the snow which fell incessantly. The night being dark, one could scarcely see these soldiers who were to guide the army which followed.
